It’s been a busy month. Debra is just into her third month of being a stay-at-home mom of two. She keeps Maggie and Carter busy with playdates, Baby Time, yoga, visits to the library and zoo. Debra’s been blogging her experiences every day at debrabaca.com. It’s tough to keep the family blog updated as often as we’d like. However, we do post photos to Flickr almost daily. Here are a few of the goings-on over the last long, hot month.

We celebrated Father’s Day. A more proud papa there has never been.

Carter took his first swim (audio muffled from waterproof case).

Maggie saw her first movie (Toy Story 3)

Carter started smiling (alot)

And Carter turned two months on July 12!

We’re traveling the my home town of Merced next week to visit with family and attend my 20 year class reunion. We can’t wait to get away from this mind-numbing heat for a few days.

Maggie is very fond of her baby brother. She runs around the house chanting ‘mommy, baby, mommy, baby’. She comforts him with kisses when he cries. Last night she and Carter were hanging out on the bed before bedtime. We got some great pictures.

Carter lost well over the 10% a newborn is supposed to lose in their first few days. But he was back to his birth weight in just over a week. Debra had help for the first few weeks home from the hospital. She, Maggie and Carter are now on their own and doing very well.

His original due date was June 1. Because of his size and position we were scheduled for an early C-section. We checked into the hospital at 9:30A and Debra was prepared for surgery. Within minutes of the spinal block I was ushered into the operating room. Three minutes later Dr. Jaacks had Carter in hand. He was glorious, breathing well and very calm. The smooth delivery was quite a contrast to the adventure we had with Maggie.

Maggie and family came to visit later that day. Maggie took to Carter immediately. Carter was crying as the nurse bathed him. Maggie took his hand and held it to comfort him. She’s going to be a wonderful big sister.

Congratulations to our cousin Millicent. She gave birth to her daughter Chloe earlier that morning. Two Baca cousins born on the same day. What are the odds?!

It’s hard to wrap my head around the fact that in less than a week, we’ll meet this little guy. It’s kinda ironic that this last ultrasound was by far the clearest picture we’d had of him so far. And we’ve had quite a few, going every month for the last half of the pregnancy.

This pregnancy has been quite the roller coaster to say the least. Maggie had just turned a year old when we found out we were expecting, so it took awhile to get used to the fact that they would be so close in age. Two in diapers and all that. Well, then came the news that this little guy had managed to get himself on the other side of my double uterus, something we didn’t think could happen. Would I be able to have the natural birth I wanted, or would I have to concede to a c-section? We agreed with the doctor that it would have to be a waiting game.

The pregnancy itself has gone really smoothly, even more so than my first. My morning sickness was hardly anything, and Maggie started napping for hours at a time, giving me some much needed rest, too. Most of the time, I had to remind myself I was even pregnant, it was going so well.

I don’t know what’s happened in this last month or so that’s turned it around. Maybe it was the swollen ankles and eight pound weight gain in only two weeks (but that’s already gone away). Maybe the fact that I have to go to the bathroom at least every two hours. Or it could be that Chuy is constantly stomping on my bowels and bladder. (I think Maggie must’ve had her feet pulled up most of the time, because I don’t remember that with her.) Possibly it was coming to the realization that I didn’t have a choice about having a c-section. Maybe it’s the fact that Maggie wants to climb all over me, and it’s just downright painful. Or maybe it’s because the baby’s head is at the top of my belly, and I feel like any minute now he is going to burst through like a scene straight out of Alien!

I’m sick and tired of being pregnant already! I met another mother who told me her due date was today, but that her first was 10 days late, so she didn’t expect to deliver any time soon. Yikes! I’m only at 36 weeks, and I’m having trouble waiting at the most another week! I wasn’t expecting Maggie to come as soon as she did. I wasn’t really ready for her. I wanted to be ready for this one, but now that I am, I feel like I’m drumming my fingers. Okay, any day now…

Debra and I both come from large, close-knit families. Debra grew up with eight siblings. Many of them started families of their own and all live right here in the Phoenix area. I was one of over 25 first cousins. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of the many Baca family gatherings. It was both our hopes that our children would grow up with the same kind of experience.

Maggie has many first and second cousins. She has five first cousins within just a few years (or months) of her and sees them on almost a weekly basis. Here Maggie was posing with her cousins Xavier and Reef at Easter.

That same day we got a great picture of Maggie and her cousins Kaitlyn and Belize.

Her cousin Nick lives just down our street.

We are so thankful that Maggie and her brother will get to grow up with such a large and loving family.

Our friend Kathy and her family hosted us Saturday at their family ranch outside Prescott. It was a beautiful day. We enjoyed great food, fresh air, hay rides and Maggie’s first horseback ride.

Maggie is no stranger to animals. She and Debra visit the Phoenix Zoo almost weekly. In fact they attended a horse event just the day before. However, this was Maggie’s first horseback ride. She did great! No fear. We took a few laps around the stable and she loved it. Within minutes of the ride ending she was running back to the stable for another ride.

The Gray family hosted a great lunch in a beautiful setting. The families took hay rides in the mountains around the ranch. A great time was had by all.

Wow. Last post was 12/31. It’s been a busy 2010 thus far. Our renter bailed on their lease in December. We spent over a month trying to find a new one. During that time Phoenix had some serious rain. The roof of the rental sprung a leak and resulted in a lengthy and expensive repair. That whole mess was finally resolved and then we all got sick (RSV). That kept us all down for over two weeks. Things are finally back to normal and we’re getting caught up on our pictures. Here are just a few of the many posted at Flickr.

On Wednesday we had our 28 week ultrasound. The baby (code named ‘Chewy’) is doing well. He’s measuring a bit big for 28 weeks and of course he’s breech (like his sister). He’s due end of May.

He spent most of the ultrasound moving. A good 3-D image was not in the cards. This image was the best the technician could do considering he had both hands, both feet and the chord in his face.

We had our 19 week ultrasound today. It’s a boy! Despite all the talk of advanced maternal age, all news was positive. Baby is growing and active.

Early indications are we may be able to have a vaginal birth. Maggie was carried on the right side of Debra’s uterus didelphys. We were able to deliver successfully (although breech). But we were told at the time it may be difficult to deliver normally if a baby were conceived on the left side (which he was). Of course that may change as the pregnancy progresses.
